LNOBT Welcomes the Premiere of Ballet "Carmen"

"

On 29 and 30 November, 2013, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre shall welcome its newest ballet premiere ""Carmen"" set to the music of G. Bizet and choreographed by Didy Veldman. Other members of the creative team are music director and conductor Modestas Barkauskas, set and costume designer Kimie Nakano (UK), Lighting Designer Ben Ormerod (UK).

This version of ""Carmen"" shall offer a new interpretation of the well-known story. According to choreographer D. Veldman, the immortal story about fatal attraction shall be transferred into the contemporary, dark world, where the exceptionally charming Carmen is using all her magic in order to survive. She disobeys all men that come into her web, manipulates them until one of them, Jose, falls desperately in love with her. Even his fiance Micaela can't tame his wild passion which leads to a tragic finale.

Before settling in Vilnius, ""Carmen"" was already shown in three continents, its first version was presented on the stage of the ""Northern Ballet"" in Leeds (United Kingdom).

The choreographic language of this new ballet is modern, and ballet artists shall be performing barefoot. D. Veldman: ""It is very interesting for me to see how performers of classical dance are mastering my modern choreography. Most artists of the company are willing to work very hard and try this new style, as difficult as it is. I have no doubts that Lithuanian dancers will create a performance filled with love and passion.""

Principal roles shall be performed by Anastasija Čumakova, Olga Konošenko, Greta Gylytė, Rūta Juodzevičiūtė, Grytė Dirmaitė, Inga Cibulskytė, Andrius Žužžalkinas, Martynas Rimeikis, Genadijus Žukovskis, Marius Miliauskas, Eligijus Butkus, Kipras Chlebinskas, Ignas Armalis, Romas Ceizaris and others.
