On the occasion of Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the European Union
Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre cherishes a beautiful tradition – it annually marks the Freedom Defenders Day with an exclusive concert, during which, in honour of the memory of the fallen Defenders of Freedom, the most outstanding works of sacred music are performed, and solemn, meaningful opuses are heard. The first half of 2027 is an exceptionally important time for the state of Lithuania – it marks its presidency of the Council of the European Union. Therefore, on 13 January, 2027, L. van Beethoven's 9th Symphony will be performed in memory of the Defenders of Freedom. This is a very symbolically chosen work – its Ode to Joy, which has become the anthem of the European Union, provides a unique and unforgettable opportunity to celebrate what the Defenders of Freedom fought for – the freedom of Lithuania and the unity of Europe.
