A ballet set to the music of G. Verdi, F. Liszt, J. P. Acosta and other composers
Lithuanian audiences are well-acquainted with Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata. But this time, the famous story of Marie Duplessis is reborn in a completely different form of a ballet, and the plot is told from the perspective of the woman who experienced it herself.
Ballet The Lady of the Camellias is directed by the Belgian-Dutch choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, who lives in Amsterdam. In 2025, she became an artist in residence at the Dortmund Theatre (Germany). She has choreographed more than a hundred works for 80 companies around the world, and this time she is creating a production especially for our ballet company.
The work features music by Giuseppe Verdi, Franz Liszt and contemporary composers, arranged into a coherent composition by Juan Pablo Acosta. This production is the first joint project of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre and the ballet company of the Estonian National Opera. By the way, this is also the first ballet co-production in the history of our theatre.
"A. Lopez Ochoa is able to look at well-known stories from a completely different angle and highlight unexpected nuances. There are not many such brave choreographers in the world who would take on complex works and treat them in their own way. In addition, A. Lopez Ochoa creates dramatic ballets, and it is precisely dramatic roles that give artists inner maturity," – says Jurgita Dronina, artistic director of LNOBT’s ballet company.
