ATTENTION! Following the recommendations of the Ministry of Culture, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is changing its repertoire and eliminating the works of Russian composers. On 23, 24 and 25 February, instead of the diptych of one-act ballets, which was supposed to feature Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring", the ballet "Der Prozess" will be performed. The only ballet premiere of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in the 2020–2021 season marks the symbolic boundary of one significant stage of the creative activity of the Lithuanian ballet company. Former artistic director Krzysztof Pastor (b. 1956) will meet symbolically with choreographer Martynas Rimeikis (b. 1980), who has been entrusted with this important position and will continue to take care of the future of Lithuanian ballet. In a sense, it is a teacher-student meeting.

K. Pastor chose Arnold Schönberg's (1874–1951) Verklärte Nacht as the premiere of the season. The dramaturgy of the play, as well as the music, is determined by the poem of Richard Dehmel (1863–1920). It tells the story of a man and a woman walking in the moonlight. She reveals a secret to her beloved: she is expecting another man's baby... A. Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht was written in just three weeks in 1899. The work immortalized composer's feelings after meeting Mathilde, the sister of his teacher Alexander von Zemlinsky - the future wife of A. Schönberg. K. Pastor Verklärte Nacht shall be performed by two pairs of soloists and around twenty dancers. The scenography of the production will be created by Adomas Jacovskis.

M. Rimeikis has wanted to touch Igor Stravinsky's (1882–1971) The Rite of Spring for quite a while. This desire was further strengthened during the quarantine, when the choreographer newly heard and felt the music of I. Stravinsky. This composer, already in 1910, saw a spectacle of pagan ritual in his imagination: the elders sitting in a circle, watching a girl dancing to death, thus sacrificing herself to the god of Spring. I. Stravinsky consulted with Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947), who was interested in the culture and mystique of ancient Russia, and they both came up with the idea of creating a theatre production. It was found that among the composer's sources of inspiration was a collection of melodies of Lithuanian folk songs collected by the folklorist Antanas Juška (1819–1880): six melodies from this collection can be found in the score of The Rite of Spring. The scenography of M. Rimeikis' production will be created by M. Jacovskis, with costumes by Elvita Brazdylytė.
