The Phantom – a mad composer with a distorted face – lives in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera. He falls in love with the celestial voice of a young opera singer and kidnaps her. One of the most lavish silent cinema productions is the first time out of many, this story was made into a film. Phantom’s success encouraged the tradition of gothic Hollywood horror and performance by lead actor Lon Chaney along with his self-invented make-up became a benchmark for it.

“The film’s strength lays in its atmosphere and the restless layers hidden in the vaults of the subconscious. The soundtrack, created by me and Kristupas (DJ Extended), will be played from vinyl records of modified symphonic fragments engraved by ourselves. We will not try to illustrate the film with emotionally corresponding music but rather to create a deeply affecting, immersive ambient atmosphere, where spectators may relax and follow the action on the screen just like a dream or a parallel space... Like putting on a film, turning off the sound and opening the window with the sounds of rain and storm coming through.” (Arturas Bumšteinas)

Arturas Bumšteinas is a composer and sound artist creating performance, installation, and radio art. He has been working with sound since the mid ‘90s and has released approx. 30 albums, presented numerous exhibitions and took part in festivals in Europe and USA. For his theater work, he was awarded with the Borisas Dauguvietis Earring and the Golden Cross of the Stage, and for the radio art – EBU „Palma Ars Acustica“. He resides and works in Vilnius.

DJ Extended is a project of sound artist Kristupas Gikas. It is based on rethinking DJ cultural field and researching traditional boundaries defying extended use of turntables. The sound pallet of DJ Extended is vibrant and diverse – spanning from silence to noise. Using various objects to prepare the turntables adds one more dimension to the colorful soundscape. Every presentation by DJ Extended is a revelation of emotional compass and bold physical charge. Every performance is a platform for achievement of small, but unique goals.
