“I’ve put my entire soul into "La bohème". I fell in love with it immensely. There are no words to describe how strongly I’ve fallen in love with the characters that were created”, – wrote Giacomo Puccini in his letter after the premiere in 1896. The audiences couldn’t stay indifferent to this opera as well: after the performances in Italy the theatregoers wouldn’t allow the performers to walk off the stage up until midnight. Over three years "La bohème" triumphed not only in Europe, but also in Africa, North and South America, Turkey. Today it is one of the most popular and most often produced masterpieces.
“The "Bohème" I feel has nothing farcical or cute. Rather, it is imbued with irony, disenchantment, sometimes even ferocity and unforgiveness. I feel the livid, unfulfilled loneliness that holds all the protagonists in its grip. I would like poetry and melancholy to deeply move us, together with this sense of death, impending over everything and everyone, and the mysterious meaning of life itself.” (Director Cristina Mazzavillani Muti)
