Ever since being startled by a loud ‘bang’ at daybreak, Jessica (Tilda Swinton) is unable to sleep. In Bogotá to visit her sister, she befriends Agnes, an archaeologist studying human remains discovered within a tunnel under construction. Jessica travels to see Agnes at the excavation site. In a small town nearby, she encounters a fish scaler, Hernan. They share memories by the river. As the day comes to a close, Jessica is awakened to a sense of clarity.

“The initial ‘bang’ awakens not only Tilda Swinton's character in the film, but also it’s spectator, giving a sharp awareness to the soundscapes of the Colombian cities and jungles where Memoria takes place. What Weerasethakul achieves with this title, as with many previous, is the almost impossible precision in communicating feelings and thoughts through subtle reverb of image, sound and story.” (Ignė Smilingytė)
