Anticipating the upcoming 700th anniversary of Vilnius, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, together with the Palace of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, has prepared a three-year program to emphasize Lithuania's contribution to the history of European opera.

“The history of old Vilnius is inseparable from the history of the opera genre: Vilnius was one of the few European capitals where opera was performed for the first time, even before the first public opera house was opened in the genre's hometown of Italy. Neither London nor Paris can be proud of that, so we, the people of Vilnius, definitely have something to be proud of,” – says LNOBT’s general manager Jonas Sakalauskas.

On 4 June, the first event will take place: the production of a traveling opera will be performed in the park of Verkiai Palace – LNOBT will present G. B. Pergolesi's comic opera “La serva padrona”. The latter is considered to be the first opera buffa: its plot is full of intrigue, romantic adventures and confusing situations created by a maid who dreams of becoming the lady of the house, and who ingeniously deceives her master.

The event is free for everyone to attend, but registration is required. We invite Vilnius’ residents to spend the evening comfortably and safely in the park of Verkiai Palace, enjoying an adventurous performance under the open sky.
