"As a director I’m most interested in the intertwining of politics and love that is present in "Fidelio". Without love, self-sacrifice and empathy we would all be crushed by the cogwheels of bureaucracy. Love is the only thing that doesn’t allow them to take over the world and prevents their final victory. Love is not just a feeling; it is also action, and the ultimate truth. In "Fidelio", the connection between these things is captured very precisely and brought to life through very accurate language that sounds very modern."
~ Director Oskaras Koršunovas
Marriage – prison – freedom. The entire storyline of "Fidelio" can be condensed into these three words. But, what conjunctions should be put between them, what causalities should be indicated? Ludwig van Beethoven, who wasn't married once over his 56 years of life, makes it very clear through the only opera he wrote: marriage (= choosing a good wife) is the basis not only for happiness, but also for freedom and salvation! Because a good wife can even save her beloved from the grip of his evil political enemies.
The current production of Beethoven's opera "Fidelio" is a co-production between the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Bergen National Opera (the Norwegian premiere of this work was presented in November 2013). In Bergen the unveiling of Fidelio marked the 200th anniversary of Norwegian constitution. An interesting coincidence is that at the LNOBT "Fidelio" was presented to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Lithuania's regained Independence.
