Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his only opera Fidelio in the full maturity of his creative powers, and it stands alone among operas, with great and peculiar qualities of its own. Its general style is serious and lofty, and strongly dramatic. Like “The Magic Flute”, it bears traces of the old German singspiel. Fidelio was first performed at the Kaerntnerthor Theatre, Vienna, on November 20, 1805.
The present production is a co-production between the LNOBT and the Bergen National Opera and was directed by one of the most prominent Lithuanian directors Oskaras Koršunovas. "A touching and deeply thoughtful production," - wrote Regine Müller (Opernwelt) after its premiere in Bergen on 2 November, 2013.
